Albert Mountain
Much like the Pickens Nose trail, the Mt Albert area is high altitude, and directly on the AT. It's certainly one of the most extraordinary views in the region south of the Black mountains. On an extraordinary morning, the front page image was captured as the sun broke through the morning clouds.

The most interesting parts of the mt Albert hike is the fire tower. The fire tower can be climbed to the most outstanding 360 views in all of Nantahala. There are two hikes to the summit. The north parking is a rather easy hike to the summit and the south side in change is rated as one of the most intense climbs on the entire northbound AT hike. From the north parking area on the north side of the mountain, the spur trail from the parking area to the AT, will produce a water pipe on the left hand side, which as of the fall really wasn't running more than just a trickle. Another 10th mile, a left turn takes you to the closest water source at Big Springs shelter (just behind it) in a rock dammed culvert about the size of a shoebox. Filter your water as flatworms have regularly been reported in the water source, though I didn't see any. A right turn leads you to the fire tower and two camp sites with extaordinary views. The campsites here are rather great but they are right on the AT and that may cause thru hikers stepping on your toes. A stairway leads you to the bottom door of the observation deck which is padlocked, but still offers great views in all directions. This hike is definitely recommended for the views or for a perfect day outing. Some new friends, Justin from Jacksonville and friends took a photograph from the summit, which curiously made the Facebook cover for nature valley the next week.

An amazing destination, 1:30 from NE Atlanta. Probably the most easy access to 5000+ foot terrain that I can recall.

Good Points
Basically a choose your own adventure route can be had, taking the easy route from the 2nd parking area or the rather challenging route from the first parking area. Views are second to none.
Bad Points
Water access is available within a half mile, and potentially at 1/4 mile from the trail from parking, campsites are limited at top, with basically only 2 to speak of.
